Review: Mystic City

Author: Theo Lawrence
Release Date: 10/9/12
Genre: YA Dystopian
Received from: Random Buzzers
Summary from B&N.com:
A magical city divided. A political rebellion ignited. A love that was meant to last forever.
Aria Rose, youngest scion of one of Mystic City's two ruling rival families, finds herself betrothed to Thomas Foster, the son of her parents' sworn enemies. The union of the two will end the generations-long political feud—and unite all those living in the Aeries, the privileged upper reaches of the city, against the banished mystics who dwell below in the Depths. But Aria doesn't remember falling in love with Thomas; in fact, she wakes one day with huge gaps in her memory. And she can't conceive why her parents would have agreed to unite with the Fosters in the first place. Only when Aria meets Hunter, a gorgeous rebel mystic from the Depths, does she start to have glimmers of recollection—and to understand that he holds the key to unlocking her past. The choices she makes can save or doom the city—including herself.

My Review:

Mystic City is ride in into this beautiful and different world, with adventure, lies, forbidden romance, politics, and a power possessed dad with a gun. The dystopian world was not that dystopian. I had some problems with the main character Aria, and a couple of the other characters.  I was put in to this book, into it's beautiful and crazy setting. Theo Lawrence's writing was incredible.

The summary describes this book better than I could, but it does not talk much about the dystopian world so I will be talking about it. What I got out of the book is that the dystopian world is mainly just New York City. The New York City in the book is very high tech, it is very political, and it's split into parts. Aeries where the rich people live, and the depths where the mystics live. There really is not much of a difference from our world today, other than the mystics which I would put more as an paranormal element than dystopian. Overall it was beautiful and exciting.

I had some issues with the characters. Aria at the beginning really got on my nerves. She had very poor judgement and she was very naive. It did get better though out the book, but you learn more about her that helps you understand her reasoning. Aria's dad was good for his role in things. but really how many times does he need to pull a gun. Most of my problems with the characters were how shady most of them were, are good are you bad just pick a side.  Me having these issues with the character made actually a little funner to read the book.

Theo Lawrence transported me into this world. With all of it's craziness, secrets, lies, and adventure. The way he worded everything made me feel like I was there. He made this book such a fun read. I loved his writing style. Theo Lawrence is an incredible author, and this book is worth your time. The forbidden romance was done beautifully, and I can't wait for more.

I really enjoyed this book. Even though I had some issues with the book, it was still really good. I loved the writing of the book. I recommend this to anyone looking for a fun and adventures read.
